Hendrik A. Kley was born in 1980 in Essen, Germany. Between 2001 and 2006 he studied film and media at the Filmacademy Baden-Wuerttemberg in Ludwigsburg, with a focus on camera studies. As a student he spent several weeks at the UCLA in Los Angeles, USA and at the PWSFTiT in Lodz, Poland taking graduate level classes.
In 2014 he shot his first TV movie “Polizeiruf 110: Smoke on the water” as a lighting cameraman, directed by Dominik Graf.
One year later his first cinema movie “Rewind” as a director of photography followed and he also worked on the documentary “Doomed Love – A Journey through German genre films” which premiered at the 66. International Filmfest in Berlin and was presented at teh Locarno Filmfestival.
2016 he shot the Tatort-Episodes "Nachtsicht" and "Zurück ins Licht", directed by Florian Baxmeyer. In 2017 he was respsonsible for the cinematography of "Der rote Schatten" - again directed by Dominik Graf.
Among his projects has been his engagement as a second unit cameraman for Dominik Graf, Friedemann Fromm, Phillip Kadelbach and Sönke Wortmann in cinema and television productions such as "Im Angesicht des Verbrechens", "The Beloved Sisters" and "Weissensee" (Season 1,2 & 3) in Berlin. This lead to cooperations with other DOPs such as Michael Wiesweg, David Slama, Hanno Lentz and Phillip Sichler
He has also been working on various documentaries, commercials and corporate films, gaining experience in countries like the USA, Hong Kong, UK, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Poland, Spain, Turkey, France, Italy and Belgium.
